For lack of any other mothion, I will comment yon your Rush quote: self interest is not neccesarily a bad thing: neither is flowing water if it is flowing through a turbine to generate electricity or irrigating a field. It is a bad thing if it is flowing into your cellar.

That is one of the tasks of a responsible government: to channel self-interest so that it benefits families and society and doesn't wash them downstream.

Ralphieboy,

Tom Lehrer? is Dr Demento in the house? If memory serves, the good professor warned that nuclear proliferation would lead to Alabama getting the Bomb. I like Disgusting politics while playing trivial one-upmanship.

We should "re-deploy" every last troop out of Eurabia. Perhaps we could use the Corsicans and Basques as our surrogates. Personally I'm betting on the Poles. Another John Sobieski with his winged Hussars beating back the rapacious Ottoman hordes. "Post-historical" Europe is screwed. Where is Greater Poland when you need it.

The EU is spent. It needs a little Szigetvar spirit. As Theodor Korner said in "Song of the Sword". "May Heaven forske me if I ever abandon you and if I ever fail to share like a brother with my Hungarians my fate, be it victory or death". The EU is rather more like a heist-film where all the players are double crossing each other in hopes of getting all the money and the babe to themselves.

If "Isolationism" means "not instituting ill-conceived 'regime changes' that result in chaos and sectarian civil war", then it's not such a bad thing.

I think it's also safe to end the occupation of Germany, they have managed to behave themselves for the last 60 years.

Or as Tom Lehrer once put it "We taught them a lesson back in 1918 and they haven hardly bothered us since!"

@ Ray

All too true...first the (anti-Bush) party. Now the hangover. History may well judge the Bush Presidency as the last best chance.

Al Qaeda seems to be pleased with the Midterm results and it does n't take Kerryesque study habits fo'yuz to knows why.

Perhaps we have the makings of a Pat Buchanan/Nancy Pelosi National Unity Isolationist ticket in '08.

As they said in Cool hand Luke, "What we have here is a failure to communicate".

The U.S. is becoming isolationist and will begin withdrawing troops from Iraq, Afghanistan, Germany and South Korea.

Forget about doing anything about Iran. Europe will have to learn to protect itself.

I am just glad to see that the system of check and balances is returning to our government and that Bush has has finaly been forced to be answerable for his neocon scams. All I really hope to see a is thorough investigation of all those no-bid, cost-plus contracts that Cheney issued to his cronies at Bechtel and Halliburton.

As for Democracy in the Middle East, where the f*ck is it? Iraq is about to fall apart into three three separate states, one of which will be a theocracy aligned with Iran. Our other "allies" are feudal monarchies sitting on a powder keg in Saudi Arabia and the Gulf states, or dictators sitting on a powder keg like Musharraf in Pakistan.

I read the questions asked in the poll you mentioned, to me they just indicated the Germans' disgust at the Grand Coalition that they themselves voted into power.

I was relieved when the French rioting did not take off in Germany. I cannot say why it didn't, other than that I believe that a majority of the immigrants here are happy to live in peace, even if they don't necessarily want to integrate.

I am also pleased that America has not seen any further terrorist attacks, but if they do, I also believe we will see gangs of militias going about hanging anything Arabic-looking from the nearest lamp post: things could also get very ugly over there.

The dems sweep was razor thin, 18 house elections were decided by a total of 50,000 votes. This is in addition to the hundreds of thousands of votes for third party candidates. They now have 2 years to show their stuff or the razor will slice the other way in '08.

Ralphieboy

Now that the Democrats are in "Control" of the House and Senate. What exactly is the "plan"? as Kerry would say.

Hamas, Hezbollah, Nuclear Kim Jong Ill, Nuclear Iran?, Al Qaeda, etc... "can't we all just get along". Perhaps Nancy Pelosi will just dispatch '1 Adam 12'?

There is so much more at stake here than the Democrats' infantile need to debase Bush.

Bush will go down in History as the man that tried to bring Democracy to the Middle East. Europeans will loose their Democracy to one or several brands of Social fascism and/or Totalitarian Jihad.

It seems Germans are loosing faith in Democracy according to a recent poll. Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm guessing the Germans will not be as restrained as the French when the "Car BQ" Intifada hits Das Reich.

I beleave you're an expat? Do you have an "Exit Strategy".

Look at it this way: now you have a purpose in life - to help the Republicans regain control of the US government in 2008.

There is only one other option: refer to the "failure to adapt" clause in your naturalization papers, hand in your US citzenship and go move to a stable, conservative, single party-dominated country like Kirgizstan.
